Dr Michelle Dharmasiri - Clinical Standards Committee Chair

Dr Michelle Dharmasiri MBChB FRCP

I am a Consultant Stroke Physician at the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a busy medium-sized District General Hospital and I provide leadership and significant clinical input throughout the stroke pathway. My areas of interest include investigating cryptogenic stroke and HASU care. I have responsibility for all our clinical standards and pathways. I lead on local education, training and mentorship along with an active involvement in clinical research.

I have been a keen member of the BASP Clinical Standards Committee for 3 years and I am committed to providing leadership and collaboration to support and implement the BASP strategy.

Stroke and Me

I first became interested in Stroke Medicine during my Geriatric registrar training rotations in Severn Deanery. I completed a stroke fellowship in Wessex in 2014 resulting in a Stroke/Geriatric and General Medicine CCT in 2015. This year allowed me to focus on gaining a deeper understanding in all aspects of stroke care. I pursued a fulltime career in Stroke Medicine as I find the mix of intellectual challenges, along with the holistic multi-disciplinary care, very professionally satisfying. Throughout my career I have seen stroke management develop from a conservative nihilistic approach to something much more dynamic and interventional and am privileged to be part of a committee dedicated to supporting those advancements.
